Architektur – Theorie – Geschichte
Marc Nötges M.A.
The format “Architecture and Criticism” examines criticism as a central category of architectural thought and practice across three intertwined dimensions: philosophical-theoretical, discursive, and practical. The starting point is a theoretical exploration of the concept of criticism itself, drawing, among other things, on poststructuralist, feminist, and decolonial perspectives.
Building on this, the module focuses on architectural criticism as a textual genre and activist practice: its historical development, its media forms, and its normative and aesthetic premises. In the third part, criticism is understood as a practice and related to architectural and spatial strategies that aim to reflect on, question, and transform social and political conditions.
This module is designed for master’s students with an interest in architectural theory, a willingness to engage in intensive textual analysis, and a motivation to participate in group discussions. It combines group reading sessions with analytical and discursive approaches and aims to foster the development of independent critical perspectives. Classes will take place in a group setting over three to four intensive sessions, supplemented by individual online sessions for in-depth discussion of selected topics and questions. The dates will be announced at a later time. Registration via OLAT, KIS, and marcnoetges@outlook.de
