How does architectural criticism work today? What means are used in architecture to articulate the noticeable reorientation of socio-spatial practices in the wake of the crisis? Which instruments of criticism are appropriate and effective in dealing with the various areas of tension that arise between humans and the environment? How are acute collective concerns – environmental and climate crisis, resource consumption and soil sealing, land use and distribution, and intergenerational, equal opportunity, and inclusive access to space as a resource – recorded, addressed, and communicated in architecture?
Against this background, the exercise is dedicated to reflecting on tools and methods that enable us to engage in current discourses. In this exercise, we will deal with the concepts of architectural theory analyzed in the lecture. In groups, we will analyze the application, effectiveness, and relevance of concepts in different formats of architectural criticism. With this analysis, we aim to understand the interaction between the concept as an instrument of theory and criticism on the one hand, and architectural criticism as a practice on the other, and to appropriate this practice. The goal is to practice together the tools of criticism provided by theory, using concepts that can also set valuable processes of insight in motion in architecture.
