Who doesn’t know the ‘chaise longue basculante’ – known to most as the work of Le Corbusier. Other design classics, such as the LC2 ‘fauteuil grand confort’ armchair or the ‘fauteuil dossier basculant’ chair, were also attributed to him alone for many years. It is now known that other people were also involved in the design of this furniture – above all Charlotte Perriand, who was not recognised for a long time. Charlotte Perriand was an independent woman: architect, designer, photographer and visionary. She worked with Le Corbusier for 10 years and spent a further 6 years working in Japan, where she gathered inspiration for her later works and projects. In her designs, she always considered human needs combined with functionality and aesthetics.
In this seminar, we will explore Charlotte Perriand’s life and work by trying to recreate her thoughts through
research, research and recreations, learning from her and being inspired by her. Together we will explore her past, learn her design language and record our findings in a collection. By analysing women in design and architecture, their significant contribution to the development of modern architecture becomes visible. It is important to emphasise this contribution and raise awareness of it. Registration by e-mail to viktoria.schabert@rptu.de.
Interested students from the 5th semester onwards are also welcome to take part in the seminar.
