In the coming semester, we would like to look at the conversion of large existing buildings in Munich and design communal living spaces.
Munich has a particularly tight housing market with the highest rents in Germany. This makes the city a sought-after location for investors and property speculation. Due to rising interest rates, energy prices and construction costs, several investors are currently going bankrupt.
We want to seize the moment and occupy these ‘investor ruins’. In an intensive dialogue with the existing structure, we are designing new living spaces for a collective of residents. We are working intensively on the floor plan and overlaying old and new like a collage to create spaces for experimental living.

Due to the central location of the buildings in Munich’s urban fabric, site-specific uses are also being developed that locate the building in the neighbourhood. The design explores the question of resource-conserving construction with a minimal use of energy and the search for a new aesthetic for existing buildings.
The semester will be accompanied by contributions and discussions from experts. Together we will study various residential buildings and existing buildings on the excursion to Munich.
