The critical reflection framework of the disciplines of History of Architecture and Theory of Architecture lies at the interface between history and the present, theory and practice. As an instrument of reflection, the disciplines examine cultural and socio-political backgrounds, mechanisms and structures that influence the creation and reception of architecture. Theory and history of architecture deal with intentions, attitudes and world views that are inscribed in architectural design and justify the architect’s actions. Architects have a duty to engage in a critical and committed examination of the changing requirements of the present. For this to succeed, a repertoire of tools – media of architecture – is needed for the production, reception and criticism of architecture in practice, research and teaching.
Architectural media – drawings, models, diagrams or simulations, film, photography or digital media, magazines, pamphlets or facsimiles, actions, interventions or apparatuses – are vehicles of thought and theory formation. Dynamic in their behavior and innovative in their technology, they function like seismographs: they record and articulate movements of thought. As media of criticism and mediation, they enable discursive thinking; they trigger processes of reflection and generate new orders in practice. The lecture series provides insights into the broad spectrum of architectural media and discusses their historical development and mode of action.
