The critical framework for reflection in the disciplines of architectural history and architectural theory lies at the intersection of history and the present, theory and practice. As instruments of reflection, these disciplines examine the cultural and sociopolitical contexts, mechanisms, and structures that influence the creation and reception of architecture. Architectural theory and history address the intentions, attitudes, and worldviews embedded in architectural design that underpin the architect’s practice. In doing so, architects have a duty to engage critically and actively with the changing demands of the present. For this to succeed, a repertoire of tools—architectural media—is needed for the production, reception, and critique of architecture in practice, research, and teaching.
Media of architecture—drawings, models, diagrams, or simulations; film, photography, or digital media; journals, pamphlets, or facsimiles; actions, interventions, or apparatuses—are vehicles for thought and theory-building. Dynamic in their behavior and innovative in their technology, they function like seismographs: they record shifts in thought and articulate them. As media of critique and mediation, they enable discursive thinking; they trigger processes of reflection and generate new orders in practice. The lecture series offers insights into the broad spectrum of media of architecture and discusses their historical development and modes of operation.
