In the summer semester 2024, a methodological- theoretical research seminar (6 ECTS) with around 20 participants will approach the phenomenon of structurally induced vacancies in the retail sector from two different perspectives: On the one hand, we will focus on the typological development history of inner-city retail spaces in the 20th and 21st centuries in comparison with changes in social and economic structures. Secondly, in the form of an explorative study on a conceptual and atmospheric level, we will focus on the specific qualities, niches and spaces of possibility in the terrain Vague der Leere. The seminar is dedicated to examining the phenomenon of such abandoned, vacant and often neglected spaces in the city. They are difficult to grasp, theoretically multi-layered and highly topical as a phenomenon
The theses and tools that we (discover) for the transformation of such spaces open up unusual perspectives on the existing buildings and prepare the ground for a differentiated, multi-perspective design practice. After all, transforming vacancies and activating existing buildings requires more than just spatial and structural measures. Above all, transformation projects require condensed programming that combines different actors, time categories and activity formats. In dealing with these interconnected phenomena, socio-economic backgrounds, programming and buildings are in dialog. This can give rise to processes of rewriting and overwriting, of reinterpreting and reinterpreting the existing. The empty space here stands for a reservoir or space of possibility for experience, appropriation and speculative-utopian occupation.
