Architectural models have always been an integral part of architectural design as tools that mediate between conception, materialization, and communication. Depending on the context, however, they transcend their role as mere planning tools and become independent objects with aesthetic, narrative, and epistemic aspirations. In doing so, they can both subvert the logic of representation within architecture and open up new spaces of meaning in which architectural and artistic discourses intersect.
Based on model and architectural theory in connection with artistic and architectural positions, the seminar explores the question of how architectural models can function as transformative objects: How do they negotiate definitions of model, architecture, and art? What role do representation, fiction, and synthesis play in their interpretation? And to what extent do they open up spaces of possibility beyond functional or disciplinary attributions?
The seminar takes place as a block event on three dates and is aimed at students who are willing to engage in-depth with theoretical texts and at the same time test them in practical questions in the context of architecture exhibitions and architectural exhibitions. The elective module “Idea as a Model” takes place in cooperation with the design studio “Exhibition Architecture. Spatial Fi
