Heritage preservation encompasses a broad spectrum, ranging from the research, preservation, and maintenance of historic buildings to their structural development and public outreach. At RPTU Kaiserslautern, the course is offered in the summer semester as a lecture combined with a practical exercise in building surveying. The lecture covers and discusses the history and theory of historic preservation, design for historic buildings, issues related to inventorying and listing, as well as current heritage discourses. The building surveying workshop consists of an introductory session and two field trips to the Baroque monastery complex in Homburg, where students will gain hands-on experience with both traditional manual measurement and the use of a 3D laser scanner.
