The lecture focuses on important concepts in architectural theory. As instruments of reflection, the disciplines of architectural theory and history examine the cultural and socio-political backgrounds, mechanisms, and structures that influence the creation and reception of architecture. Architectural theory and history deal with the intentions, attitudes, and worldviews that are inscribed in architectural design and justify the actions of architects. As a ‘theoretical practice’, architectural theory is also a prospective discipline that promotes analytical, synthetic, and critical thinking. The lecture series explores architectural theory concepts such as sign, atmosphere, fragment, form, utopia, author, use, structure, etc., and discusses their function, mode of action, and significance for architectural production and reception.
&n
Concepts in architectural theory are changeable and require constant review. Their arguments and relevance reflect socio-political backgrounds and cultural contexts, which are themselves undergoing transformation. Engaging with concepts therefore also implies engaging with their history. Concepts will be explained in their historical and current context during the course of the lecture and analyzed using exemplary works. Starting from current efforts to revise some of these concepts, the lecture will reconstruct their histories and discuss their relevance today.
