The area around the Donnersberg is geologically unique in Central Europe. The geology of a landscape is always the basis for what and who can thrive on it, but also for what, with what and how we can build on it. ‘Craftsmanship’ is the name given to the cultural technique that people have developed in order to produce architecture, among other things, with the locally available geological and plant materials. It is also a literal means of understanding, communicating and cooperating. Last but not least, craftsmanship in an academic context provides an opportunity and potential for research. ‘Bau Hand Werk’ is the continuation of last year’s “Maintenance” workshop in a listed vineyard in Zellertal. We will be able to assess its results one year after they were produced and draw lessons from them.
We explore the immediate surroundings and collect limestone, loam, clay, sand and also components that have already been used as a basis for further renovations and repairs to the historic building fabric. As a real laboratory, we will test methods and develop techniques for responsible building and try to recognise and evaluate their effects.
